Argentina, land of tango and Gardelīs cradle
Argentina is one of the eight largest countries in
the world with more than 2.5 million square kilometers to tour
and discover. Its capital; Buenos Aires, main tourist
destination in South America, is the home of the music of Gardel,
the literature of Borges, and the sensual tango. The rest of
Argentina is also very attractive and interesting to visit. The
so-called "interior of Argentina", zones that surround the
capital, provides diverse climates with a large variety of natural
regions.
Argentina consists of eight well-defined
regions.
The
northwest, is a vast region that is characterized by its arid
landscape, desolate plateaus, "yellow-leaf" forests, adobe
pueblos, folklore, cordial people and an indigenous ambience that in
some ways remembers Ecuador or Peru. Here we find the famous Tren
de las Nubes (Train of the Clouds), that tours the northern part
of the Andes mountain chain, reaching heights of 4,200 m (13,775 ft)
above sea-level. The principal starting point for touring this
region is Salta. |
 |
The Cuyo region, located at the foot of the
Andes is one of the most dynamic and stable regions of Argentina due
to its agricultural riches and its energetic resources. The high
peaks overlook the region and the beautiful national parks dominate
the land. National parks include Tupungato Volcano Provincial
Park and especially the Aconcagua Provincial Park where
one finds the Cerro
Aconcagua (Aconcagua Mountain), known as the "Roof of South
America". This region's capital is Mendoza,
one of the largest wine-making regions in the world. |

Chaco is a region that touches Bolivia and
Paraguay. Its distinctive trait is that of a massive, internal basin in which
the currents of water that descend from the snow-capped mountains
are lost. It is here that the combined elements create
the Iguazu
Falls, the magnificent waterfalls that give Iguazú
National Park its name.
The subtropical region of Mesopotamia
is encircled by the Parana, Uruguay, and Iguazu rivers. The region
possesses a variety of vegetation such as corridor-like jungles that
follow the course of the rivers, tiny wooded islands, and grassy
plains. Colón
and the Palmar National Park are located here.
The
Pampa is an immense, herbaceous plain primarily tree-less
and muddy. It embraces the provinces of Buenos Aires, Santa Fe, La
Pampa and part of Cordoba. Of course, here is where
the capital of Buenos
Aires is located, one of the most important tourist
destinations in Argentina and of South America.
The Patagonia Argentina (shared with Chile)
is comprised of the provinces of Neuquén,
Río Negro (Black River), Chubut, Santa Cruz and the Tierra del
Fuego (Land of Fire). It is divided into the Andean Patagonia and
Antarctica. The Andean sector is characterized by its cold
climate, with abundant precipitation, and vegetation with dense
forests of araucarian, cypress, larch, lenga, coigüe
(evergreen) trees, etc. Places to visit include the city of Esquel
and the Alerce National Park, the Glacier
Perito Moreno which is found in the Glaciers National Park,
and one of the favorite destinations of Chilean tourists during the
winter, San
Carlos de Bariloche and la Ruta de los 7 Lagos (Route of the 7
Lakes).
The Patagonia Antarctica or extra Andean,
different from the Andean region, has characteristics such as
staircase-like ascending plateaus between 700 and 1,000 meters
(2,295 and 3,280 ft) high, sierras with an average height of 1,000 m
(3,280 ft), and fluvial valleys that cut across the region from west
to east. Its climate is cold, arid, and windy, with cold average
temperatures that become more frigid the further south you go.
Located in this region are the Peninsula
of Valdés, Tierra
del Fuego and Ushuaia.
