Salta and Tren de las Nubes

Situated more than 1.500 km from Buenos Aires, Salta
is the base point in order to travel to some of the most interesting
places in northeast Argentina. Its characterized by the colonial
aspect of its constructions, just as much in the old as in the
modern. Some of its examples are Casas Hernández
and Arias Rengel, The Cabildo
or San Francisco Cathedral.
In the dams of Cabra Corral, situated
only 63 km from Salta in the area of Coronel
Moldes. Here you can accomplish all types of nautical activities,
as well as enjoying the villas of recreation or visiting the enormous
General Manuel Belgrano dam.
The famous Tren de las Nubes (train of the
clouds) that leaves from Salta (situated at 1.183 above
sea level) to the la Polvorilla viaduct -in the heart of the Andes
Mountains-, ascends up to 4.200 meters and it travels 217 kilometers
utilizing the branched C-14 of the General Belgrano railroad.
The route is characterized by its 19 tunnels, 29 bridges, 9 coberts
and 13 viaducts. It was constructed for the purpose to bring products
from Salta and to the region of the ports of the pacific.
The convoy does not use racks, it is to say it is the traction
the locomotive has that it hauls 10 cars that compose the convoy.
The train has the capacity for 520 passengers. It crosses the
heart of puna salteña passing
through small Andean towns, oasis's, gorges and ravines.
