Salta and Tucuman: The Colonial Jewels

Salta and Tucumán: The Colonial Jewels

Season:  Available all year round
Duration:  7 days / 6 nights
Price: from US$ 724

Northeastern Argentina is, for the most part, a multicolored desert, sculpted by the wind and criss-crossed by flowing green valleys. It’s an area known for its pre-Columbian and colonial culture, maintained throughout time by its height and dry climate. On this tour, you can see the Calchaquíes Valleys, Salta, and Tucumán, where interesting ruins, though modest, are dispersed throughout the Northeast. It is a place where the fresh air, the colored mountains, and the irregular geological formations of the gullies make this an unforgettable place.

Included Excursions

San Miguel de Tucuman

San Miguel de Tucumán
This is the only city in Northeastern Argentina with a large immigrant population. This has always been a prosperous commercial center with a rhythm of life similar to Buenos Aires. It's worth visiting the Government House and the Independencia, with large rooms and majestic facades. Another place you don't want to miss is the Parque 9 de Julio, designed in 1916, with a rose garden, lake, polo field, stadium, theater, tennis club, Italian garden, and others, all inside. Another place worth visiting is the Villa Nogués and San Javier, located at the top of the Aconguija Mountains. Both are summer centers; in San Javier, at the top of the mountain, a large statue of Christ the Redeemer was put up and a university. From these places, you can get an excellent view of Tucumán.

Quilmes is an old bastion of the Calchaquíes Indians, with beautiful prehispánic urban architecture. Its walls of flat, well placed rocks have conserved perfectly, though its roofs of enormous cactus beams disapeared a long time ago. The local guides conduct the visitor to some of the most interesting parts of this large area, among those that have been fortified, are a large dike and a dam.

Train to the Clouds

Optional Excursions
"Train to the Clouds"
(Every Saturday from May to October)
This trip, now dedicated exclusively to tourism, is one of the most spectacular attractions in Argentina, and one of the last great trips in train that can still be done in South America. The train leaves from Salta and goes to the bottom of the Quebrada del Toro, then starts its slow ascension. The line is an authentic engineering work of art and doesn't use gears though for the steepest parts of the climb the train zig-zags and spirals to get up. The train operates form April to October. You should ask beforehand about the dates of departure.
